Origins
The Fulani Braids style originate deep in West Africa and the Sahel Region from the Fula also known as the Fulani Tribe. The traditional Fulani style features long braids, mostly five, that hang on the side or are looped on the sides and a central cornrow (coiffure) running from front to back at the center of the head.
Fulani style in the cities
The Fulani Braids style in the cities does not differ much from the traditional style. Though you would expect some tweaks and updates in the urban cities the styles still have some common characteristics as listed below.
-A braided cornrow at the central part of the head, braided from front to back
-One braid looped around the circumference of the head; this may be missing in some styles.
-One or two cornrows at the side of the head braided from back to front so that they hang in front of the ear.
-Beads or other hair accessories on the hanging braids.
Popular Fulani Braid styles
Fulani Braid styles have many variations as the styling is only limited by one’s creativity with the braids. There are some popular styles though, many of which you may see on your favorite celebrities. These include:
Simple Fulani Braids style
This style features box braids at the back of the head. A central cornrow is plaited from front to back at the front part of the hair and from here other cornrows running horizontally to the sides originate. Added beads on the hanging braid tails gives it the desired Fulani touch.
The Braided Swoop
The cornrows in this style run from one side of the head to the other. From where these braids running from side to side originate another braid is plaited from back to front and hangs in front of the ear. Beads added on the hanging braid give the style the Fulani Touch.
The Fulani High Bun
This Fulani Style is mainly characterized by thick braids, three in the back and three in the front. One or two thinner braids hang on the side of the head plaited from back to front. The thick braids make this style take less time to do.
Conclusion
Fulani Braids style especially the Fulani High Bun style takes less time to do which gives you a good option when you are in a hurry and don’t want to let your hair loose. Creativity with Fulani Braids style is only limited by one’s imagination. You can choose to do the traditional beading or leave them out. You may also decide to add the loops or not to add. Either way with the Fulani Braids Style you will still look great
