Liverpool fans in Thailand are being cautioned by Thai police to be vigilant against online scams involving impersonation of Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso, a potential successor to Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.
The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) highlighted a viral message circulating online, alleging that Alonso, a frontrunner for the Liverpool manager position, was requesting donations of 300 baht (approximately $8.50) for his flight to Liverpool.
The deceptive message, written in Thai, claims, “‘I will be in charge of Liverpool next season, but I need 300 baht for my flight to Liverpool.’”
Thai police confirmed the message’s falsity, revealing it as a manipulated version of Alonso’s official Instagram account designed to deceive fans. Emphasizing that Alonso’s appointment as Liverpool manager is yet to be confirmed, authorities urged supporters to stay calm and avoid falling victim to the scam.
Xabi Alonso, a beloved figure at Anfield, is among the top candidates to replace Klopp, who surprised the football world with his decision to step down at the end of the season.
Given Liverpool’s substantial fanbase in Thailand, characterized by red shirts and club crests adorning various elements of the local landscape, the warning serves as a precaution against potential scams targeting enthusiastic supporters.
