Elizabeth Oshoba etches her name into the annals of history as she becomes the first female Nigerian boxer to secure a world title, triumphantly claiming the World Boxing Council silver featherweight championship.
In a compelling showdown in Copenhagen, Oshoba secured her maiden world title with a commanding (6-0-1) victory over Italy’s Michela Braga in the tenth round. This significant win extends Oshoba’s professional record to seven consecutive victories, including a remarkable fourth career knockout, and hands Braga her first professional defeat.
The defining moment of the match came in the eighth round when Oshoba displayed a dazzling performance, sending Braga to the canvas. The final knockout blow in the tenth round sealed the victory and established Oshoba as the WBC silver featherweight champion.
Ecstatic about her historic achievement, the 24-year-old champion expressed her joy, stating, “Yes, of course, I feel on top of the world. I am very happy with this title, it is my first (world) title, but I am still focused, and I can’t wait to fight more world title fights and claim the main WBC belt.”
This triumph follows Oshoba’s earlier success at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where she secured a silver medal.
Azania Omo-Agege, the Interim President of the Nigeria Boxing Federation, showered praise on Oshoba for her historic victory. Omo-Agege remarked, “I am not surprised that Oshoba became a champion; she has always been one, and I have always regarded her as a champion too. I was very happy when I saw that she claimed the WBC silver title. She is one of our best athletes in Nigeria, and I wish her good luck for the future.”
Oshoba’s recent triumph follows another title victory in November, where she defeated Martina Righi via unanimous decision to secure the IBO female super-featherweight title, marking a remarkable journey for the rising star in the world of boxing.
