The United States Bureau of Prisons has announced its intention to investigate the circumstances surrounding a viral video featuring Ramon “Hushpuppi” Abbas, a convicted individual currently serving an 11-year sentence. The video, which surfaced recently, purportedly shows someone believed to be Hushpuppi participating in a celebratory feast within the confines of what was reported as his detention facility at Fort Dix, New Jersey.
In response to the video, the prison facility issued a statement on Thursday night, affirming its commitment to addressing the matter seriously. The investigative department is set to spearhead the inquiry, aiming to ascertain the veracity or lack thereof regarding the events depicted in the viral footage.
Tunde Adekunle, popularly known as Tunde Ednut, a close associate of Hushpuppi and a social media influencer, celebrated his birthday on January 22. During the celebrations, a video emerged showcasing an array of foods, including jollof rice, pasta, and soda drinks, seemingly taking place within a jail facility.
In the video, a voice, believed by many Nigerians to be Hushpuppi’s, is heard expressing well wishes to Tunde Ednut and highlighting the different dishes prepared for the birthday celebration. The footage displays a setting with features resembling a prison interior, sparking speculations that Hushpuppi was enjoying a lavish celebration behind bars.
Individuals familiar with Hushpuppi’s voice insisted that he was indeed the person featured in the viral video. Hushpuppi, aged 41, was convicted in 2022 for his involvement in a multimillion-dollar international fraud scheme. He was arrested in Dubai and subsequently extradited to the U.S. to face charges related to his criminal activities.
During the initial years of his incarceration, Hushpuppi actively participated in prison educational courses and took on responsibilities such as cleaning prison facilities. He became recognized as one of the correctional facility’s diligent toilet cleaners in an effort to earn a reduction in his sentence.
On January 19, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in Los Angeles dismissed Hushpuppi’s appeal to review and reduce his 11-year sentence, citing his good behavior during his time in jail as one of the grounds for the decision. The investigation into the recent video aims to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the celebratory gathering within the prison facility.
